How Do I Display Double Lines in Tablix Items in SQL Reporting Services?

During a recent SQL Reporting Services 2008 (SSRS 2008) report design project, the client needed to display the totals within a Tablix report item with bottom double line border

Unfortunately there appears to be an undocument feature, that when designing reports using Tablix and Matrix report items, and one tries to apply a double line border to one of its a cells, that when the report is previewed, this formatting is not displayed.

The main reason for this is that the cell is not large, wide, enough  space to display the second line of the double line formatting.

Solution:

As workaround one has to do the following:
  1. Apply the Double Border formatting to the cell(s)
  2. Change the Border Width size to at least 3pt
  3. Create a second row under the matrix/tablix row
  4. Resize the additional row to be at least half the size of the original row
