What's the difference between Current Date and Data Date?

Recently, delegates on my Crystal Reports training courses have been asking me a lot about the difference between Current Date and Data Date, so I thought I would add a quick post about these two Date functions.

On face value, these two date function are and act the same, and are updated when the report is :

  • Opened/Refreshed,
  • Previewed, and/or
  • Printed.
The difference comes when one interacts with a report.

For example, if one creates and runs a report, saves the report with the data, and closes the report down, today.

If the report is then opened a week later.,but not refreshed, the Current Date will show the date a week later, while the Data Date will show today's date, until the report is refreshed.

Personally I tend to use either Current Date in my selection formulas, and reports, rather than Data date, especially as I do not tend to save the data with my reports
