Cognitive Dissociation

This is how I am currently feeling, after the constant media bombardment with this Coronavirus.

I guess it does not help that I am under house arrest, but when you are keep on hearing and seeing things that do not make any sense to your internal barometer then you maybe suffering from Cognitive Dissociation.

Cognitive Dissociation is where you experience conflicting theories, ideas, beliefs or behaviours.

So for example with the current Coronavirus pandemic, where they show the number of deaths per day, is less than seasonal flu.

Or when Boris Johnson comes on National media to say that he has the Coronavirus with the symptoms of a persistant cough and a high fever, but does not cough once!

Under normal circumstances, according to Festingers' 1957 Theory we are have an internal compass that keeps our attitudes, behaviours and beliefs in balance or harmony, this is known as cognitive consistancy.

However when these are not in balance, so for example when you read or see something that you know/feel  not to be true or does not make any sense, i.e. seeing people outside the hospital linked upto to breathing equipment and they are smoking, this is where cognitive dissociation occurs.

Situations like that causes Cognitive Dissociation, which in turn requires:
  1. Forced Compliance Behaviour
  2. Decision Making
  3. Effort

There are 3 methods to change Cognitive Dissociation:
  1. Change the current beliefs
  2. Create new beliefs, or
  3. Reduce the importance of the beliefs

So with this in mind with the whole hysteria over Coronavirus, I am going to go for number 2

I am going to start researching the web w.r.t. the issue of mortality rates, both in general and with Covid 19, and do some data analysis, because the media hype does not make any sense!

Stay turned to find out what I find out...
