How Do I Sort the Group Summary in Crystal Reports?

A client recently asked "How do I sort a report by the group summary in descending order in Crystal Reports?"

When groups are added to a report Crystal Reports sorts the group name in one of 4 ways:

  • Ascending Order,
  • Descending Order,
  • Original Order, or

  • In Specified Order


To sort a report by the summary field, one has to use the Group Sort Expert feature of the Crystal Reports

  1. Create the report
  2. Add the required group(s) to the report
  3. Add the required Summary field(s) to the Group Header/Footer section
  4. From the Report Menu select the Group Sort Expert option
  5. In the Group Sort Expert dialog box:
    • Select the required Group Field
    • From the For this Group Sort drop down select All
    • Select the required summary field to sort by
    • Select the sort direction of the Summary field:
