A - Z of a Successful Freelance IT Trainer: A is for Associate

Over the last couple of months a number of IT trainers has asked about my knowledge and experience of being a freelance IT trainer, so I decided to give my take on the roller coaster ride, that is the life of a freelance IT trainer.

To read how I became a freelance IT trainer click here.

A is for Associate

The biggest problem, after getting over the fear, when becoming a freelance trainer is being known and building a great reputation.

When starting out most freelance trainers opt for the Associate Trainer model.  This is a great model as it allows on to build the reputation, simply because you are only as good as the last training assignment and the resultant happy sheets.

It is a good idea to register with a number of training brokers/bookers/agencies, so that you do not rely too heavily on just one source of income, and you have the opportunity to be exposed to a number of sources of training assignments.

As with all things there are advantages and disadvantages, here are a few listed below:

 Advantages Disadvantages

 Little/No marketing costs involved
 Little/No control over daily rate
Potentially more work May have to work more days per
  year
Can potentially get involved in long-
 term training roll-outs

Majority of the time, will deliver
 the client course outline
 Cannot exploit further training
 opportunities directly
All the administration is usually
 done for you
 Little/No control over the delivered
 course content
In most cases if the end client goes
bust, you will still get paid
Some issues only come to light on
 the day of training.

 Little/No control over payment
 terms

There is little opportunity to turn the
 delegate into a direct client

With so many associate trainers on
their books you may get forgotten

When signing up as an associate trainer all training brokers/bookers/agencies will ask you to sign some sort of agreement with the general terms of no client contact of an average of 12 months from the last training assignment, and payment terms, on average 30 - 45 days after the invoice has been received.

As in all things not all training brokers/bookers/agencies are made equal, so before signing up to any and/or doing work for them ask around.

Below are a list of some that I use and/or have used in the past:

This is not a definitive list, if you have any freelance training agencies/broker companies that you can recommend, please let me know.

I would like to hear your comments, experience, opinions and thoughts about this subject, please drop me a line or two below:
